Boyd Eugene "Gene" Matthews the son of Ervin Matthews and Agnes (Wooley) Matthews. Vera Agnes (Johnson) Matthews the daughter of Elmer Miles Johnson and Ester B (Thorn) Johnson.
Vera Matthews
Vera Agnes Matthews, 88, of Walnut Ridge, died Jan. 4, 2010.
Born Aug. 16, 1921, at Hoxie, she was the daughter of Elmer and Ester Thorn Johnson. She worked as a bookkeeper for Matthews Oil Company for 30 years and was a member of United Free Will Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gene Matthews; two brothers, Howard Johnson and Delbert Johnson; a sister, Ruby Cole; and a grandson, Bradley Matthews.
Survivors include her husband, Gene Matthews; two grandsons, Chris Matthews and wife Cyndi, Searcy, and Layne Matthews, Walnut Ridge; two great-granddaughters, Madison Matthews and Molly Matthews; and a former daughter-in-law, Suzanne Harp, Black Rock.
Funeral is Thursday at 10 a.m. in Bryan Chapel with Bro. Harold Russell officiating. Burial will be in Lawrence Memorial Park under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Blake Burns, Miles Johnson, Eric Burns, Danny Gibson, Robert Speer and Kevin Slayton.

Boyd Gene Matthews
Boyd Eugene (Gene) Matthews, 97, passed away Sunday, June 18, at his home in Walnut Ridge. He was one of six children born to Ervin Matthews and Agnes Wooley Matthews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his siblings; his wife of 74 years, Vera Johnson Matthews; a son, Harold Gene Matthews; and a grandson, John Bradley Matthews.
Survivors include grandsons, Chris Matthews (Cindi) of Searcy and Layne Matthews of Walnut Ridge; two great-granddaughters, Madison and Molly Matthews of Searcy; sister-in-law, Clarice Matthews of Franklin, TN; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Harp of Black Rock; and other relations.
A life-long resident of Lawrence County, he was of the Baptist faith and a Mason. He was owner and operator of Matthews and Son Exxon Distributorship until his retirement. He was an accomplished horseman, a generous and devoted grandfather, and a faithful friend. His life was a testament to his strong values and an inspiring example to all who knew him.
A celebration of his life was held by the family with interment following in Lawrence Memorial Park.
Those wishing to honor his life are asked to consider the Walnut Ridge Children’s Shelter or the Lawrence Memorial Park Fund.
