DEATH OF A PIONEER CITIZEN

Asbury C. Womack, an honored and beloved citizen of Decatur and a resident of Benton County for more then 62 years, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S.J. Mericle, Monday at 10:30 p.m. after a long illness.

Mr. Womack was born near Osawatomie, Kansas, Nov. 21st, 1865, and moved to the community six miles west of Bentonville when only four years old. He was married to Miss Viola Wilkins at Sulphur Springs in 1881. Their married life continued 55 years.

His education was limited to the rural schools, but the acquired a higher education by reading and studying long after his school days were closed. Early in life he became a printer and followed that profession for more than 50 years. He was postmaster at Paetolus, Ark., then an inland town in Benton County, under the administration of President McKinley. During the years 1910 to 1914 he was editor of the Horatio Times. Disposing of his interest there, he returned to Decatur where he lived until his death. He became united with the Methodist Church when a young man, and was devoted to living an upright Christian life. His sterling worth and long residence have combined to make him one of the most honored men in the community, and his death will bring deep regret to many friends both here and in his old neighborhood.

He leaves his wife, one son, Edwin Womack, of Poteau, Okla., and one daughter, Mrs. S.J. Mericle, of Decatur; two brothers, William F. Womack and Richard I. Womack; one sister, Mrs. Elmer Johnson, all of Centerton; also seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Campbell, Methodist minister, at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial was in the city cemetery at Decatur.
