COMBS, Mrs. Clay - Mrs. Clay Combs, living 11/2 miles south of Monte Ne, was so badly burned Friday afternoon that she died Sunday morning as a result of her injuries. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon and burial was at the Stanley cemetery, south of Monte Ne. Mrs. Combs was ironing and was standing quite near the front of the stove. As she turned to pass it a sudden blast of gas caused a flame to shoot out of the front of the stove and her clothing caught fire in the back. Assisted by her 16 year old daughter, who was the only person in the room with her, Mrs. Combs made a hard fight to extinguish the flames. Finding the efforts of no avail she ran from the house and sprang into a spring some distance away but the relief came too late as most of her clothing had been burned and she was terribly injured about the back and sides. Her husband and son, who were working near the barn, heard the screams and reached the unfortunate woman just after she had leaped into the spring. She was carried back to the house and medical aid at once summoned but nothing could be done save to attempt to alleviate her sufferings and she passed away Sunday morning. The daughter was badly burned about the hands. The deceased is survived by her husband and seven children, three daughters and four sons, the youngest being a baby of only four months. Mrs. Combs leaves three sisters, Mrs. Robt. Thomas, living south of Monte Ne; Mrs. Chas. Sharp of Wesley, Madison Co. and Mrs. E.E. Evans of Grove, Okla. Mrs. Combs was well known to a large circle of friends and her untimely death is a matter of great grief to all. The bereaved family have the deepest sympathy of the community.
