KILLS MATE, SHOOTS SELF
Mrs. Maggie James Cooper, 35, killed her husband, Daniel Obediah Cooper, then committed suicide
at their tent home near Cherry Valley Sunday night, county officers said Monday. Deputy Sheriff
Rudolph Clements of Cherry Valley, who investigated, said Mrs. Cooper shot her husband twice with
a .32 caliber pistol, and then a few minutes later fired one shot into her heart. The cause was
said to have been family trouble. The couple lived in a tent at a logging camp near the St. Francis Bay.
A man living in a nearby tent heard the first two shots and rushed into the tent. He told officers
that Mrs. Cooper put the gun in his face and ordered him to leave or get shot. He quoted the woman as
saying that she had killed her husband and that she intended to take own life. The man walked out of
the tent and a few minutes later she fired the shot that ended her life.
Maggie James Cooper and Daniel Obediah Cooper are buried in Tyer Cemetery near Cherry Valley.
