Merrill A. Box, born and raised at Decatur, who rose from a section hand on the Kansas City Southern to that of roadmaster of this great system, died a few days ago at his home in Neosho of heart failure. High officials of the K.C.S., including President C.E. Johnson, attended the funeral services in Neosho and a special funeral train composed of a baggage car, four coaches and two private cars, brought the body from Neosho to Decatur where burial was made in the cemetery there. Besides President Johnson other prominent officials who attended the funeral were, W.M. DeRamos, general manager; E.H. Holden, general superintendent; E. Phelps, tax commissioner; J.M. Prickett, superintendent, and many others. The floral offerings were unusually beautiful and half filled the baggage car. Mr. Box was with the Kansas City Southern for 35 years. He was held in high esteem by the company and those who were fortunate enough to know him will never forget his hearty greetings and genial manners. He was a frequent visitor to Decatur where his mother, Mrs. Martha Box, survives him. Mrs. H.C. Riley and R.A. Box, a sister and a brother, also of Decatur, are the other survivors.
