GROSS, John R. - Funeral services for John R. Gross were held at the Hazel Glen Presbyterian Church at Vaughn on September 19th at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. F.A. Bradshaw officiating. Burial followed immediately after in Barron Cemetery by the side of his wife who had passed away just two months previous. Mr. Gross was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee Jan. 27, 1857 and died at his home near Vaughn Sept. 17, 1930 at the age of over 73 years. January 10, 1884 he married Mary A. Osborn and they moved to Benton County in September 1885. At an early age he united with the church. There is no immediate family surviving. Mrs. Maude Hoback, a relative, had been reared in the Gross home and with her husband, Richard Hoback, took care of Mr. Gross after his wife's death. The Grimsley family is also distantly related.

Bentonville, Sept. 19.— John Gross, 73, well known Benton county citizen, died suddenly Wednesday night at his home southeast of Bentonville, near Vaughn. He seemed in his usual health on his return from work and ate a hearty supper but shortly after he retired complained of acute pains in his arm and side and died before a physician could be called. He was born in Tennessee, near Bristol, and came to Benton county in 1884, living in the Vaughn community ever since coming to the county. He is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. R.A. Hoback, of Vaughn; by a niece, Mrs. Culver Crowder of Ojai, Calif.; and three nephews, Jim Grimsley of Vaughn; Bevelle Grimsley of Ojai, Calif. and Bunk Grimsley of Malta, Montana. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Vaughn church by the Rev. F.A. Bradshaw and burial was in the Barron cemetery.
