BELEW, James Henry - James Henry Belew was born July 16, 1851 in Alabama and departed this life at the home of his son, R.L. Belew, where he had been tenderly cared for during his last sickness, September 28, 1929 at the age of 78 years, two months and 12 days. At an early age he moved with his parents to Missouri where he remained only a short time then came to Benton County where he has lived in the neighborhood where he died for about 65 years. In March 1870 he was united in marriage to Mahala Ann Galyean who had come to this county a few years before the coming of Mr. Belew, the Galyeans being among the pioneer settlers of this community. Four sons were born to this union as follows: R.L., W.H., S.T. and J.A., all of Hiwasse except Tillman who departed this life in 1916. His companion preceded him one year and three months. Besides the three sons he leaves to mourn his death nine grand children and four great grand children and a large number of relatives. When he was about 22 years of age he united with the Christian church and was baptized by Elder Mal Banks, a pioneer Christian minister of this section, and lived a faithful Christian soldier until death. He seldom missed a meeting of his church and contributed money to support the ministry as his means would permit. "Uncle Jimmie," as his neighbors loved to call him, was one of the best types of citizens and always took a great interest in the up building of this community educationally, morally and religiously. He was kind and was considerate of others, refraining from speaking evil of any one and his jolly disposition and the kindness of his heart which radiated from his face, made his presence enjoyable by all who associated with him. No doubt it can be truthfully said that he was loved and respected by all who knew him. His companion was confined to her home for a long time before her death and the tender care given her by the deceased won for him the admiration of all and almost since the time of her departure he had been praying that he might go to be with her and to get free from his sufferings. Funeral services were conducted at Mt. Pleasant Sunday afternoon, September 29 by Eld. J.T. Hinds and the body was laid to rest by the side of his companion in the presence of a large crowd of friends.

BELEW, Mahala GALYEAN - Mahala Belew, wife of J.H. Belew, died at her home in Hiwasse Wednesday, June 27th, 1928, aged 76 years, eight months and seven days. Mahala Galyean, daughter of Chadrick and Ruth Galyean, was born in Grayson County, Va. October 20th, 1851. Coming with her parents to Benton County, Ark. in 1859 she lived in and near Hiwasse until her death. In 1870 she was united in marriage with J.H. Belew. To this union were born four sons, all of whom grew to manhood near Hiwasse. One son, Tillman, died August 22nd, 1926. Lee, W.H. and J.A. all live near Hiwasse and were with their mother during the many weeks of her last illness and when death came. She became a Christian in 1873 and was faithful to her Master unto the end. "Aunt" Hala, as she was generally known, was stricken with tuberculosis of the bone 50 years ago and was practically an invalid since that time, the last 12 years of her life having been spent in a wheeled chair. Besides her four sons, "Aunt Hala" reared a niece, Gertie Wages Duncan, who now lives at Fayetteville, Ark. Left an orphan at an early age, Gertie was loved and cared for in the Belew home as if she had been a daughter and her affection for her aunt and uncle is as great as a daughter's could be. She was with Aunt Hala constantly during her last illness and lovingly ministered to her. Besides her aged husband, who gave her every care a loving companion could bestow, and her sons, she leaves to mourn her departure a brother, Alex M. Galyean, and three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Croxdale, Mrs. R.F. Nichols and Mrs. Edna J. Wells; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as hosts of friends.
