FUNERAL RITES MONDAY FOR MRS. S.T. HIGGINBOTHAM

Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie T. Higginbotham, aged 87 years, eight months and 26 days, widow of the late George W. Higginbotham, who died unexpectedly about 6:30 o’clock p.m., Friday, Dec. 27th, 1935, at her home three miles south of Bentonville, were held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at the Bentonville Baptist Church, of which she had long been a member, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. LeRoy C. Tedford. Two hymns were sung by the church choir, and a solo, “I Shall See the Light of Home,” by Mrs. J.H. Morgan, with Mrs. F.E. Rogers as accompanist.

Burial was in the family lot at the Oakley Chapel cemetery, southeast of Bentonville, and the pallbearers were Beverly Rakes, Will Rakes, Jim Rakes, Frank Rakes, James Drummond and Lee Smith. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Burns Funeral Home of Bentonville.

A daughter of Joseph and Myria McDonald Sexton, members of pioneer Virginia families, Mrs. Higginbotham was born April 1st, 1848, at Chatham Hall, Virginia. She was married at Chatham Hall on May 13th, 1868, to George W. Higginbotham and they lived in Tazewell County, Va., until moving in 1892 to Harper, Kansas. In 1901 they and their children came to Northwest Arkansas, locating here in Benton County on the same farm near Bentonville where Mrs. Higginbotham passed away, and where her husband died in April 1917.

Mrs. Higginbotham had been identified with the Baptist Church since girlhood and active in church work until advancing years and declining health would no longer permit. She was a woman of genuinely gentle breeding and loved by all who knew her well.

She is survived by three sons, Dr. M.W. Higginbotham and Joe B. Higginbotham of near Bentonville, with whom she lived and Sexton Higginbotham of Kansas City, Mo.; and by six daughters, Mrs. M.L. Voyles and Mrs. Ed Engstrom of Little Rock, Mrs. C.L. Denny, _?_, Colo., Mrs. J.L. Cockrell, Fort Wayne, Ind., Mrs. A.W. Fullerton, Neosho, Mo., and Mrs. S.W. Hallock, Springfield, Colo. She also is survived by a number of grandchildren and by one brother.

Among her children and other relatives and friends coming here on account of her death were Rev. and Mrs. M.L. Voyles, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Engstrom, Miss Mary Voyles, and John Walters, all of Little Rock; Mrs. A.W. Fullerton of Neosho, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. Sexton Higginbotham and children of Kansas City. Due to distance and weather conditions the three daughters living in Indiana and Colorado were unable to be here.
