DUNHAM, W.H. - Dr. W.H. Dunham died at the family residence in this city on Tuesday the 27th inst. at 2:40 o'clock a.m., aged 77 years. For many years has Dr. Dunham made Bentonville his home and had, by fair and honest dealings with his fellowman, made hosts of friends, and the announcement of his death on the streets early Tuesday morning caused many expressions of sorrow from our citizens. Dr. Dunham was a good man. Those who have resided near him for many years speak of him in the highest terms as a neighbor. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a devout christian and a prominent Republican leader. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Wednesday and the remains were laid to rest in the Hart cemetery, four miles south of this city. To the bereaved ones the sympathy of the entire community is extended.

The following memorial on the death of Dr. W.H. Dunham was read before the Benton Co. Medical Society at its meeting in this city on the 12th inst.: The life of Dr. W.H. Dunham began in Brown county, Ohio on the 25th of May 1824 and after more than 77 years ended at his home in Bentonville, Ark. on the 27th of August, 1901. In 1864 he graduated from a medical college in Cleveland, 0. After 36 years of active practice, 17 in his native State and 19 in Missouri, ill health forced him to retire, his only recnt professional services having been rendered as a member of the pension board during the last four years of his life. In 1887 he became a citizen of Bentonville, Ark. where he left many friends. His wife of more than 50 years and five children, one a physician in Missouri, are left to mourn his death. Dr. Dunham was a member of the Presbyterian church. Although unable to practice during the last 16 years of his life he never lost interest in his chosen profession. This was exemplified by his continued membership in this society and attendance at its meetings, even when it was necessary to drive to distant places of meeting. To know Dr. Dunham well was to become his friend, and to enjoy his friendship which was of that sincere, unwavering and unselfish type, was indeed a privilege. Possessed of strong convictions as to right and wrong he was ever ready to endorse the former, and his very frankness made him equally quick to rebuke the latter. An attack of apoplexy about ten years before his death left his voice permanently impaired and this, along with several mild repetitions, warned him of impending danger. About a fortnight before his death he was attacked with hepatitis, due probably to a somewhat chronic diarrhoea. Complicating this was hypostatic pneumonia and greatly increased paralysis of his throat, the latter not occurring until forty-eight hours before death. With the oncoming of this last he lost power to expectorate and he was almost literally drowned in his own sputum.
