IMBODEN - Austin A. Stovall Sr., 97, of Imboden died Monday, May 25, 2009, at his home.

Born April 30, 1912, the son of Andrew and Nancy Stovall of Evening Shade, he moved to Imboden at age 16 and was a resident there until his death. He was a 1932 graduate of Sloan-Hendrix Academy and attended Arkansas State College, now Arkansas State University. He was a member of the Imboden Church of Christ.

He was united in marriage on Dec. 22, 1942, to Edith Kell. They co-owned and published the Imboden Journal and later the Ozark Journal for 45 years. He served as the postmaster of Imboden for 28 years. He was a member of the National Association of Postmasters and served as the national president of that organization, as well as served in other local offices.

Austin was preceded in death in 2007 by his wife of 65 years, Edith Stovall. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd, William and Audy Stovall; and three sisters, Ella Rogers, Cena Rogers and Edna Laman.

Survivors include three children, Austin A. Stovall Jr. and wife Ann of Memphis, Martha Jane Johnson of Imboden and Janelle Stovall of Memphis; two brothers-in-law, Wilson and Betty Sue Kell of Marianna and Johnson Kell of Denver; four grandchildren, Kell Andrew Stovall and wife Heather, Coy Stovall and wife Bobbie, Matthew Johnson and wife Heather and Emily Johnson; eight great-grandchildren, Paige Stovall, Kelsey Stovall, Collin Lambert, Jett Katelyn Stovall, Austin Stovall III, Joel Hascher, William Stovall and Elisa Johnson; several nieces and nephews; numerous family friends; and caregivers, Yolanda Coleman, Vicky Rash, Chriss Hurt, Heidi Brawley and Katherine Break.

Stovall served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II. He was devoted to his community and was a charter member of the Imboden Lions Club, where he served as president many years as well as in other offices. He served on the Imboden Town Council, Sloan-Hendrix School Board and was on the Lawrence County School Board for 45 years. Additionally, he was a charter member of the Imboden Housing Authority and served on the board for 40 years.

After his retirement, he was active in the NAPUS chapter at Jonesboro and served as president. He served on the board of the Mid-South Regional Mental Health Hospital for 30 years. He was active in the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and was named “Lawrence County Man of the Year” in 1993.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Imboden Church of Christ with Ted Kell officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

Memorials should be sent to the Stovall Community Service Scholarship c/o Sloan-Hendrix Schools.

Pallbearers will be Jim Jones, Steve Jones, Terry Smith, Bob Glass, Bob Rogers, Gevan Murphy, Nathan Woods and James Weir. Honorary pallbearers are Olan Goad, Richard Woods, Dale Stovall, Wade Bellah, Homer Mize, Gary and Janice Williams, Carroll V. Willmuth, Nina Richey and Beverly Matheny.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home of Pocahontas.

Edith Kell Stovall, 91, of Imboden, died Feb. 28, 2007, at her home.

She was a lifelong resident of Imboden and, with her husband, Austin Stovall, published the Imboden Journal, later the Ozark Journal, for 43 years.

She was a 1936 graduate of Sloan-Hendrix Schools and attended Arkansas State University. She was a member of Imboden United Methodist Church, where she had served as treasurer, Sunday school teacher and on various boards and committees.

She was a member of United Methodist Women, the Altrurian Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Lawrence County Historical Society and Sloan-Hendrix Alumni Association.

Survivors include her husband, Austin Stovall; a son, Andy Stovall and his wife Ann, Seattle; two daughters, Martha Jane Johnson, Imboden, and Janelle Stovall, Memphis; four grandchildren, Kell Andrew Stovall, Coy Stovall, Matthew Johnson, and Emily Johnson Hernandez; eight great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two brothers, Wilson Kell and his wife Betty Sue, Marianna, and Johnson Kell and his wife Dorothy, Denver; two sisters-in-law, Jerry Kell, Memphis, and Retha Kell, Imboden; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral was Saturday at 2 p.m. at Imboden United Methodist Church with Revs. Matthew Johnson and Ron Kitchens officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home of Pocahontas.

Memorials may be made to Imboden United Methodist Church or the Stovall Community Service Scholarship, c/o Sloan-Hendrix School.
