A coroner's jury ruled at Norfork Monday that the death of Mrs. Edith Marie Cope, 59, was a suicide.
Dr. Walter S. Guinee, county coroner, said she slashed her throat three time with a straight razor, and he set the time of death at about 9:30AM Monday.
She was found by her husband, J.E. Cope and died before a doctor could arrive. Dr. Guinee said she had been in poor health and was despondent over the death of a son, Capt. Gordon Cope, an Air force pilot who was killed in the Korean War.
In investigation was made by Dr. Guinee, Sheriff Jack Gregory and State Patrolmen F.E. Allen, Jr and Bill Manes.
Serving as members of the coroner's inquest panel were Sid Skidmore, Rudolph Torrance, Quinby Swearingen, O.L. Gray, Edward Stewart, Bob Dickerson, Ernie Parnell, Wibur Owens, E.F. Parnell, Dan Hendrix, Glen Gresham and Henry Hager.
Mrs. Cope was born at Vila on July 22, 1898, and was the daughter of the late C.T. Stone and Mrs. Sarah Brown Stone. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Laurel Cope of Arlington, TX, Carl Cope of Grand Prairie, TX and Doyle of the Army; a daughter, Mrs. Delores Miser of San Fernando, CA; two brothers, O.A. Stone of Tupelo, MS and Ray Stone of Salem; a half sister, Mrs. Oscar Ellis of Salem and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services are set for 2PM today (Thursday) at Norfork Church of Christ, with Bro Doyle Davenport officiating.
Interment will be in the Norfork Cemetery. Roller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
