HORNSBY, Matilda LAMBERT - Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Lambert Hornsby, aged 85 years, one month and 19 days, widow of the late L.C. Hornsby, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John G. Davis, and family, 1401 South Main Street, at 3 o'clock Saturday morning, January 14th, 1933 after an illness of two months, were held at 11 o'clock Sunday morning at the Bentonville Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W.E. White, and attended by a great many Bentonville friends and a large number of friends from other points. Interment was in the Oakley Chapel cemetery, southeast of Bentonville on Highway 71, beside her son, Ewell Hornsby, who died six years ago. Mrs. Hornsby, who before her marriage was Miss Matilda Lambert, was born in Raleigh, N.C. on November 25th, 1847 and in 1860 moved with her parents to Bolivar, Tenn. where she was married in 1866 to L.C. Hornsby. They made their home at Bolivar and Mr. Hornsby died there in 1906. A few years after his death Mrs. Hornsby and children moved here to Northwest Arkansas and Mrs. Hornsby has lived here in Bentonville since 1912. Since the marriage of one of her daughters several years ago to John G. Davis, a member of an old Bentonville family, Mrs. Hornsby has made her home with them all the time with the exception of about four years, and the bond of affection between her and this son-in-law was like that between an own mother and son. For 71 years Mrs. Hornsby had been a faithful and a useful member of the Baptist Church and a regular attendant until prevented by her last illness. She was sincerely loved by neighbors and all who knew her intimately for her kindly, tolerant spirit, her steadfast faith and practice of truly Christian principles, and her constant interest in the welfare of others. She is survived by two sons and three daughters - J.A. Hornsby of Cave Springs, Ark., J.M. Hornsby of Stilwell, Okla., Mrs. M.J. Stallings of Toone, Tenn., Mrs. Earl Clark of Rogers, Ark. and Mrs. John G. Davis of Bentonville; and by 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Six other children born to Mr. and Mrs. Hornsby had preceded their mother in death.

Mrs. L.C. Hornsby, aged 85 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Davis, Bentonville, early Saturday morning. Infirmities of old age from which she had been growing weaker for some time, led to her death which was not unexpected by the family. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at 11 o'clock Sunday morning, the Rev. W.E. White conducting the services. Burial was made in the Oakley Chapel cemetery. Mrs. Matilda Lambert Horsnby was born in Raleigh, N. Car. in 1847. Her father dying in 1859 the mother and her children moved to Bolivar, Tenn. During the Civil War two of her brothers were killed when serving in the Confederate army. In 1866 she married L.C. Hornsby who also served in the Confederate army. He was captured and served some time in the Federal prison in Chicago. Eleven children were born to them, five of whom are living. Mrs. Hornsby held a remarkable record of being a faithful member of the Baptist Church for 71 years. Surviving are her two sons, J.A. Hornsby of Cave Springs; J.M. Hornsby of Stilwell, Okla. and her three daughters, Mrs. John Davis of Bentonville, Mrs. Earl {Julia} Clark of Rogers and Mrs. M.J. {Fanny} Stallings, Toone, Tenn., also by 18 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
