*Obituary

Lois Hughes, a lifelong resident of Saline County, passed away December 16, 2020 surrounded by family. Lois was a wife, mother, grandmother, seamstress, who was admired for making handmade quilts, gardener, friend, mentor and so much more. As a child, she attended Gray Hill school, a one room schoolhouse in rural Saline County. A classmate used to carry Lois on his back as they crossed creeks on the way through the woods to the schoolhouse. He did not want her to get her feet wet. That classmate, Olen Hughes, eventually became her husband. They were married for 64 years. Together they were part of America’s greatest generation. Like so many wives of that generation, Lois stayed home minding the home front while her husband was away fighting a war in the European front. Lois loved all her family. A singleness of purpose provided her with a clarity of thought in devotion to her family. She passed that legacy to her children, who in turn have passed it on to their children and so on. Lois will be missed. She leaves behind precious memories by all who knew her. Those memories will linger. Some glad morning…

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Olen. She was also preceded in death by 3 sons-in-law and 2 grandsons. She is survived by 5 daughters, 1 son-in-law, 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, December 19, 2020 with Chaplain Shelby Smith officiating at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander.

*When Olen Alfred Hughes was born on September 19, 1920, his father, John, was 33 and his mother, May, was 28. He married Lois Agnes Moody on October 25, 1941. He died on January 20, 2005, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 84, and was buried in Alexander, Arkansas.
