From the Monticello News, 3 August 2006

Mrs. Nina L. Cavender, 94, of the Bradford Co. Manor, Burlington, Pa., died July 14. She was born August 16, 1911 in New Lacy, Ga., the daughter of Paul and Lettie Liles Lang. At an early age she moved with her family to Sandy Bottom, Ga.

She attended Pearson Elementary School and graduated from Bethel Academy and Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky.

On March 26, 1936, she married John M. Cavender in Douglasville. The couple was on their way to Arkansas where her husband had accepted a position as assistant county agent.

Her husband's career and their life together took them to many locales, and they settled in Little Rock, Ark., where Mrs. Cavender lived for 32 years. In 1989, she moved to Pennsylvania to be closer to her daughters and their families.

Mrs. Cavender taught English in high schools in Georgia and Arkansas. She also taught sixth grade at the Anthony School in Little Rock, Ark., for some 15 years, and at Edgewood Academy in North Little Rock, Ark.

She was a member of the Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock, Ark., the Gilbert Marshall chapter of the DAR, and the John Eliot chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century.

Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Sherry and James Spencer of Sayre, Pa., Nina and William Osbourn of South Williamsport, Pa.; granddaughters, Courtney Warren of Waverly, N.Y., Leslie Shelhamer of Elmira, N.Y., Kara and Molly Osbourn of South Williamsport, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Eric and Grace Shelhamer of Elmira, N.Y.; sister, Sue Lane of Monticello, and several other relatives.

Her husband preceded her in death, as did her sisters, Angie Fuhrmeister and Billie Burney; and brothers, Marshall Lang, Woolard Lang, Strozier Lang, Gordon Lang, and Mack Lang.

Funeral services were held July 20 at the Athens United Methodist Church in Athens, Pa., with the Rev. Martin Bovee officiating. Burial was July 22 at the Pine Crest Cemetery in Little Rock, Ark., with clergy from Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church officiating.
