On May 3, 1948 in Hope, Arkansas, Grady and Rosie Walton welcomed the birth of a daughter, Mary Louise Walton.
Mary’s Christian experience began at a young age where she attended Garrett Chapel Baptist Church in Hope, Arkansas. She was a 1966 graduate of Yerger High School, after graduation she was one of the first black students to attend and graduate from Red River Vocational Technical College in Hope, Arkansas.
On June 3, 1972, she married the love of her life, Vernon Meeks. She became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist where she was a Deaconess, Church Clerk and Financial Secretary. Later in life she discovered her passion as being a Teacher, she was the teacher at Prescott Head Start in Prescott, Arkansas where she loved her students but soon retired in 2008. She became a member of the American Legion Post #427 and served as their Treasurer until her health failed.
She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life such as being with her husband, shopping, going out to eat, hanging out with family and watching her favorite NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. She had the biggest heart, a beautiful spirit and very outspoken.
Mary was preceded in death by her father Grady Walton, Sr.; her mother Rosie L. Walton; sister Pearline and brother Grady Walter, Jr.
Leaving to cherish her memories her loving husband of 47 years Vernon Meeks of Prescott, Arkansas; her daughter, Carol Collins (Dave) of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; her son Darron Meeks (Sharonda) of Houston, TX; her step-daughter, DeVonne Meeks of Prescott, AR; her grandchildren: Kyron, Dave III, Jaydon, Ashlan, Marcus, and Dasha. Her sisters: Jewel Crockett (Steve) of Hope, AR, Shirley Lee (Jerry) of Texarkana, TX, Mary Ragland (Ronald) of Texarkana, TX, Queenie Walton of Hope, Patricia Moore (Jackie) of Hope. Her sisters-in-law, Elaine Walton of Hope, Nell Sample Meeks of Helena, Sandra McFadden of Little Rock, Josephine Russ of San Diego, LaFae Glasgow of Omaha, Nebraska, Shirley Garmon (Bert) of Hot Springs.
He brothers: James Walton of Council Bluff, Iowa, Thomas Walton (Erma) of Texarkana, TX, William Walton (Annette) of Houston, TX. And Joe Maxwell. Her brother-in-law, Leo Meeks Jr. (Susie) of Prescott, an aunt Geneva Hearns of Omaha, Nebraska, two great-grands, a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins and a host of friends which will miss her dearly.
Visitation will be from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, December 20, 2019 at BRAZZEL/Cornish Funeral Home 1196 HWY 371 West Prescott, Arkansas 71857.
Funeral service will be 11:00am, Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial to follow at De Ann Cemetery in Prescott. Arrangements are with BRAZZEL/Cornish The Funeral Home of Hope, Eddie BRAZZEL, Director. Online condolences: www.brazzelfuneralhomes.com
