Kay Terry Spencer
October 1, 1935 — December 27, 2014

*Obituary
Kay Terry Spencer, age 79, of Little Rock, Arkansas passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014.

She was born October 1, 1935 in Dewitt, Arkansas to Walton and Helen (Hines) Terry. Kay grew up in St. Charles, Arkansas, helping her father at Terry’s general store when needed. She attended Hendrix College, and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

She married James Edward (Jim) Spencer and moved to Newport, Arkansas to start a family. While there she employed her talents in music, theater and art by taking on the hammiest roles in the annual Service League Follies, portraying Bloody Mary in ‘South Pacific’ and Aunt Eller in ‘Oklahoma!’ The family moved to Little Rock in the ‘80s, where Kay spent untold hours volunteering at the Arkansas Arts Center, the Fine Arts Club, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC), and the Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute (CARTI) doing everything from stuffing envelopes to chairing these organizations.

In 2003, Kay suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed on her left side, but her wheelchair made it to birthday parties, holiday celebrations, baseball games, dance recitals and lunches with friends.

Kay is survived by her sisters, Yvonne Rodgers of Bayou Meto, Julie Johns of Benton, Libbie Terry Dougan of Galloway, brother Sam Terry of Southlake, Texas, her children Steve Spencer of Little Rock, Jimmy Spencer of Little Rock, Elizabeth Spencer of Nashville, Tennessee, daughter-in-law Angie Spencer of Little Rock and beloved grandchildren Sam and Addie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and by Todd and Reese.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Arkansas Arts Center, 9th & Commerce / MacArthur Park, Little Rock, Arkansas 72203-2137. The Reverend J. Russell Snapp and The Reverend Herschel McClurkin will host. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Arkansas Arts Center, The Humane Society of Pulaski County, any of the organizations listed above, or the charity of your choice.
