Bernice Murphy Cunningham, 81, of Hamburg, died Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at her residence. Mrs. Cunningham was a native and resident of the Milo Community outside of Hamburg for many years and a former resident of Bastrop, Louisiana for 32 years. She was a 1956 graduate of Hamburg High School. Mrs. Cunningham was a homemaker, and worked at Summerland Lane Nursing Home and Whit’s Pharmacy in Bastrop. She was a member of the Judson Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Cunningham loved spending time with her family, mostly her grandkids and great-grandkids. She enjoyed cooking sewing, decorating, traveling, and everything she did, she did with everyone else’s happiness in mind.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Billy Giles Word in 1981; her parents, Hugh Buck & Feddie Amos Murphy and four brothers, Billy Faye Murphy, Robert Dennis Murphy, James Edward “Dick” Murphy, and W.E. “Hoss” Murphy.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Robbie Cunningham of Hamburg; her children, Billy C. Word and wife, Beverly, of Oak Ridge, Louisiana, Dana Word Maddox and husband, Stephen, of Marianna, Florida, Keith Cunningham and wife, Janet, Steve Cunningham and wife, Laura, all of Hamburg, David Cunningham and wife, Susan, of Benton and Teresa Cunningham of Hamburg; four brothers, Ed Murphy of Hamburg, Jerry Murphy and wife, Linda, of Albany, Georgia, Harold “Sugar” Murphy and wife, Shirley, of West Monroe, Louisiana and Doyle Murphy and wife, Beverly, of Bastrop, Louisiana; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 10 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2019, in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Steve Franklin officiating. Burial will be in the Dailey Cemetery. Pallbearers are Junior Jeffers, Wade Pennington, Roy Murphy, James Cunningham, Jonathan Ezell, and Mickey Amos. Honorary pallbearers are Frankie White, Jeff Foote, Ken Byers, Ronnie Livingston, William Moffatt, and Mike Murphy. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
