September 17, 1936 - February 19, 2004
Coach Ronald "Ronnie" Bateman, 67, of Fort Smith died Thursday, February 19, 2004, in his home. He graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1955, and then attended the College of the Ozarks on a basketball scholarship.
He was the boys head basketball coach at Ramsey Junior High from 1959 to 1962, where his 61-62 team won the state championship. He was an assistant basketball coach at Fort Smith High School (Northside) during the 62-63 season. He became the first head basketball coach of Southside High School in 63-64, and later became Southside's first baseball coach in 1990. His 57, 68 basketball team was state runner-up. Besides coaching basketball and baseball during his 40 years at Southside, he also assisted in football, and was the boys head golf coach at his retirement in 2003. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Freeman Bateman.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, four daughters and their husbands, his mother, his mother and father-in-law, one brother, and five grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2004, at Wesley United Methodist Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Carol Ann "Mimi" Bateman of Fort Smith passed away on Thursday, August 5th, 2021, in her home. Carol was born June 29th, 1937, in Blaine County, Oklahoma to Norman Zahn Jr. and Gladys Linden Zahn. She graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1955. Carol married her high school sweetheart, Coach Ronnie Bateman, in December 1956. Carol was preceded in her death by her husband, Ronnie Bateman and her parents Norman and Gladys Zahn. She is survived by her four daughters, their husbands, grand children and great grandchildren.
