Arkansas

August 31, 1963 - January 18, 2015

A. Rolanda Hurst died Monday, January 19, 2015. She was born on August 31, 1963 in Hot Springs. She attended St. John's Catholic School and later graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1981. She is survived by her parents, Franklin and Alessandra Hurst; her sister Dr. Katharine L Hurst and her two loving nieces, Sophie and Sarah Rudder; aunt Dorothy and uncle Charles Ridgway;one uncle, Arnaldo Baggio in Italy; and numerous cousins. After graduating from high school, she moved to Dallas, TX where she attended Baylor University School of Nursing, graduating with a BSN degree and a focus on transplant nursing and critical care. She later became the Baylor Liver Transplant Coordinator and earned the "excellence in transplant nursing award" in 1990. She maintained her credentials as a (CCRN) critical care registered nurse throughout her career. Her deep love of travel and adventure took her to San Jose, California for several years where she continued to pursue nursing in surgical, trauma ICU's, and burn units. Never one to turn away from a challenge, she learned to surf and became involved with local charity events. She ultimately returned to Arkansas to be close to her family and continued working in the ICU environment, most recently at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock. Rolanda served more than 11,000 patients and their families for 29 years, going out of her way to treat them with great respect and compassion. She was "honestly informative and obviously caring”, laughing, and praying with her patients, while providing the most advanced level of nursing care. She protected her patients and treated them with dignity and they loved her. While in Arkansas, she learned to turn her love of nature into art by joining the Grow and Show Garden Club and later cofounding the Mint Juleps Garden Club with her mother Alessandra, and becoming a national garden club accredited flower show judge. Rolanda was also on the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute Board of Directors and screening committee from 2001 through 2009. She was also an American Heart Association board member from 2001 through 2005, helping to renew the tradition of the annual Hot Springs Heart Ball, serving as Co-chairman in 2005. She attended mass regularly at St. Andrews Cathedral in Little Rock Arkansas. Rolanda was a beloved aunt, sister, daughter, cousin and friend to all who knew her.
