Bill
October 5, 1928 - September 30, 2002
Son of Reed and Helen Louise McKinley Oliver
Hazel
November 6, 1930 - January 10, 2018
Hazel Ann was born Nov. 6, 1930, in Batesville, Miss., to Charles E. and Pearl Paine Cathey.
She passed away Jan. 10, 2018, in Richardson, Texas, with loving family by her side.
She was married to Bill Reed Oliver of Fort Smith in 1948, soon after her graduation from Fort Smith Senior High School.
She is survived by her three children, Cathey Ann Oliver, Carol Lynn Reed and Charles Reed Oliver; her sister, Ethelyn Pankratz; and brother, Charles Cathey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill; sister, Charlotte Stewart; and granddaughter, Jessica Jane Oliver. Hazel has seven great-grandchildren.
Hazel became an LVN in the late 70s and enjoyed the challenges and satisfaction of nursing. During the early years of their marriage, Bill and Hazel were “doodle buggers” as they relocated frequently across the South and Southwest. Bill’s work in the petroleum industry also saw them living in Shreveport, La., during the later years of his career. Hazel was a supportive partner in Bill’s work in addition to being the essential and faithful caregiver for the children, grandchildren and extended family members when the need arose.
Bill and Hazel lived in Fort Smith the last years before Bill’s passing. They were longtime members of Central Presbyterian Church. In their retirement years they were active in the church and community. They also had the opportunity to travel extensively.
Hazel was an avid reader and shared her love of books with her family and friends. She was creative in all areas of her life, especially in cooking, sewing, poetry and teaching.
A memorial service will be planned in the spring in Fort Smith.
