Hubert
March 1, 1920 - June 19, 2004
Hubert J. Nicholas, 84, of Van Buren, Arkansas passed away Saturday, June 19, 2004. He was a retired coal miner from Evans Coal Company and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. A man of simple words, simple truthes and strong values, Hubert J. Nicholas was a husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. He passionately believed in the ties of family and added new members from all walks of his life, the Civilian Conservation Corps Co. 3795, his many fishing holes, the United Mine Workers Association, Razorback games and Sebastian Masonic Lodge No. 706, where he was a 32nd degree Mason.
He was preceded in death by two sons and one daughter. He will be loved always.
He was celebratd, honored and remembered at Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith at 11 a.m. by the women he called his wife for 63 years, his son and daughter, as well as his daughter-in-law and son-in-law, and his grandchildren.
Burial was at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Ruth
May 15, 1922 - August 14, 2012
Pawpaw wanted his fishing buddy back, so Edna Ruth Nicholas of Van Buren left us to join him Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012. Ruth began her life in Winslow and was the daughter of Sally and Alvis Center, as well as a sister to Jack Center, Gene Center, Bonnie Beaver, Chris Jones, "Sonny" Center and the twin of Ralph Center, all of whom preceded her in death.
Two brothers, Bobby Joe Center of Winslow and Jerry Center of Alma, survive Ruth.
She became the wife of Hubert J. Nicholas, caring for him during their 64-year marriage until 2004 when he preceded her in death.
Ruth was the fantastic mother of son, Jim R. Nicholas of Baytown, Texas; and daughter, Mary J. Keys of Muskogee, Okla. Her most beloved role was Memaw, where she curated "Camp Nicholas," hosted world famous weenie roasts and proudly displayed fluorescent orange toes to honor her three grandchildren, Kristy Nicholas, Brent Nicholas and Sally Keys. Her latest source of pride was her first great-grandchild, Kimber Reigh Nicholas, who she met this summer, where she proudly presented her with a crocheted blanket made by her own hands.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate a life filled with Christmas candy, pecan pies, quilts, gardens, care, compassion, lessons and fun-filled memories that will carry on through the generations, beginning with a viewing and reception at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith on Friday at 11 a.m.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Roselawn Cemetery.
