Betty Hammons, age 79, was born March 29, 1934, to the late Roy and Mildred Jerry in Union County, AR and died November 27, 2013, at her home in Strong, AR.
Betty grew up on “Jerry Hill” on HWY 82 outside of Strong. She attended Strong High School where she played basketball and was part of the 1953 Union County Championship team. On May 5, 1954, she married Tommy Hammons and in the following years they had two children. They lived in the New London community north of Strong until 1978 when Tommy and Betty moved into Strong and opened the Dari Diner which they owned and operated until 1991. They then retired back to the community of New London. Throughout her retirement years, Betty enjoyed making a variety of crafts, hunting and fishing, cooking and getting to care for her family and grandchildren. Betty was a long time member of New London Baptist Church and was loved by her family, friends and neighbors.
Betty is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Tommy Hammons; daughter, Glinda Hammons; son, Ray Hammons and wife Deborah; grandchildren, Thomas Hammons and wife Kelly, Haven Sibley and husband Kevin, and Jillian Burns and husband Blake; great granddaughters, Isabelle and Meadow Burns; and a great grandson on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Sherry Fielder and husband James, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Robert Jerry and Jackie Jerry.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday, November 30, 2013 at New London Baptist Church near Strong.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 1, 2013 at New London Baptist Church with Bro. Brandon Phillips and Bro. Tommy Nash officiating. Burial will follow in the New London Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of El Dorado.
