Lawson M. Curnel, 86, of Fort Smith, Arkansas died Monday, September 27, 2004, in Fort Smith. He was born October 1, 1917, in Tolu, Kentucky. He was a 1935 graduate of the Marion Kentucky High School, attended Western Kentucky State University in 1936 and Evansville University from 1937 to 1941, and joined the Army Air Force and became an Army pilot. In 1943 he joined Republic Aviation in Evansville, Indiana where they were building the P-47 Thunderbolt Army Fighter; he served as general manager of flight testing through 1945, was divisional director at International Harvester for 10 years, then moved to the Whirlpool Corp. and served as divisional director for 22 years.
In 1961 he began a special assignment to the Whirlpool International Division as manufacturing consultant at the Brastemp Corp. in Sao Paulo (St. Paul), Brazil, South America, and retired as director of quality assurance from the Whirlpool Corp. Fort Smith Division. He was the widower of Kathryn Curnel.
He is survived by a daughter, two sons, a sister, and six grandchildren.
Funeral was held at 1 p.m. Friday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort smith.
