Annabel Clay Combs, lifelong Fort Smith resident, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at her daughter's home in Ponca City, Okla. She was 82. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Roselawn cemetery in Fort Smith, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at Southside Baptist Church in Fort Smith with the Rev. Ken Overturf officiating. Arrangements are under the directions of Trout Funeral Home of Ponca City, Okla. Annabel was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Fort Smith to Matt C. and Savannah Georgia Clawson Clay. She was raised in Fort Smith and graduated from Fort Smith schools in 1936. She attended business school and became an accountant-bookkeeper in the tax accounting business. She worked for many years for Harold White, CPA. She kept books up until January 2002. She was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church of Fort Smith, where she was Sunday school secretary, was active in choir, and served as the music librarian. She enjoyed traveling, music and crocheting. She is survived by two daughters, the Rev. Dr. Sheila Combs-Francis and her husband, Tom, of Ponca City and Denny Combs of Little Rock; one granddaughter, Anna Combs-Francis of Ponca City; two nephews, Dr. Donald Clay and his wife, Renee, of Fayetteville, Dr. David Clay and his wife, Dr. Beth Clay, of Fayetteville; four cousins, Christy Lou Stipe and her husband, Garland, of Fort Smith, Cathrine Brown of Oklahoma City, Alice Clawson of Fort Smith and Mildred Price of Coffeyville, Kan.; three great-nieces, Savannah Elizabeth Clay, Emma Kathryn Clay and Mary Amelia Clay; one great-nephew, John Thomas Tinsley Clay; and her beloved cat, Sam. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Gene W. Clay.
