Reverend Archie N. Boyd, 97, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, departed this life, Tuesday, June 8, 2010 in Van Buren.
Reverend Archie Boyd was born September 11, 1912 in Lavaca, Arkansas.
He finished grade school in Lavaca and graduated high school in Hartford, Arkansas. He held B.A. degrees from John Brown University at Siloam Springs, AR and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, as well as a B.D. degree from the School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. Reverend Boyd served as a Chaplin in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a 33 degree Mason and served for two years as state Chaplin of the American Legion, and one year as Grand Chaplin of the Grand Masons in Arkansas. He served for 33 years on the board of directors at the Methodist Village Nursing Home and he served as Chairman five times. Reverend Boyd was a reserve delegate to the South Central Jurisdictional Conference as well as Chairman of the committee that planned the Conference Council on Ministry. Reverend Boyd served as pastor of the following Methodist Churches, associate pastor of the Floral Heights Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas, St. Paul Methodist Church in Fort Smith, AR, First Methodist Church in Deport, TX, Berryville Methodist Church in Berryville, AR, Washington Avenue Methodist Church in North Little Rock, AR, First Methodist Church in Wynne, Arkansas, where a new church building was erected during his ministry there, and First Methodist Church in Searcy, AR. He then became District Superintendent of the Forrest City and Fort Smith Districts prior to his pastorate at Goddard United Methodist Church in Fort Smith where he served for 12 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Boyd.
He is survived by one son, Edward P. Boyd of Van Buren, AR; one grand daughter, Michelle Zimmerman and her husband, Brandon; two great grandsons, Carter and Peyton Zimmerman; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Roebuck Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.
