GUION — Robert Harold "Bobby" Guthrie, 78, of Guion died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010.

Born May 24, 1932, in Bandmill, he was the son of Thomas Walter Guthrie and Maud Tomlinson Guthrie. He was united in marriage to VaRue Arnold on Dec. 9, 1952, in Conway. While attending Arkansas State Teacher's College, he was a member of the baseball team. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960, having been stationed in Germany for most of his tour.

On returning to Arkansas, he taught at Newport Junior High School and later became the principal. He earned a master's degree from Arkansas State University and then served as superintendent at Tuckerman School District. After nine years there, he served as superintendent at Melbourne School District for nine years. After leaving the school district, he was employed by Arkansas Highway Department as an assistant surveyor, retiring in 1992.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years; a son, Robert H. Guthrie Jr. of Melbourne; two daughters, Nancy Pierce of Van Buren and Gaile Guthrie of South Carolina; six grandchildren, Thomas Johnson of Melbourne, Summer Guthrie, Autumn Dale, Savannah Guthrie and Fallon Farris, all of Conway, and Brooke Johnson of North Carolina; three great-granddaughters, Gracie Johnson and Lily Hope Johnson, both of Sage, and Sophie Johnson of North Carolina; a brother, Johnny Guthrie of Batesville; three sisters, Val Blum of Dearborn, Mich., and Shirley Hill and Betty McCollum, both of Melbourne; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill Guthrie; and a sister, Faye Peckham.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday at Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne with Frank Shell and Rob Ernest officiating. Burial was in Melbourne Cemetery under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Pallbearers were Danny Taylor, Chris Hill, Doyle McCollum, Wally Guthrie, Paul Womack, Donald Cheatham, Dean Batterton and Danny Simmons.

Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Taylor, David McCollum, Vernon Stills Jr., Steven Cagle, Paul Seay, Shelby Upton, Lynn Pittman, Dick Williamson, Joe Miles, Glen Hunt, Diane Honey and Laura Guthrie.

VaRue Arnold Guthrie passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022, at a Mountain Grove, Missouri nursing home. She was born August 22, 1935, in Chastain, Arkansas, the youngest of seven children of Jay and Nancy Rogers Arnold. She lived most of her life in north central Arkansas. She married Bob Guthrie on December 9, 1952, in Conway. They had been married 57 years when he passed away in 2010. She attended Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway majoring in physical education. She had been a P.E. and science teacher at Newport, Tuckerman and Melbourne, Arkansas. She lived in Germany while her husband was in the service. She had been a resident of Guion, Arkansas until two years ago when the need for dialysis treatments necessitated her move to West Plains, Missouri. She enjoyed visits with family, time with her pets, watching sports on TV, working crossword puzzles and sudoku.

She is survived by their three children, Nancy Pierce of Ft. Smith, Gaile Ranz of Cave City and Bobby Guthrie of Van Buren; six grandchildren: Thomas (Jessi) Johnson, Brooke (Kyle) Cherry, Summer (Charlie), Drake, Autumn (David) Dale, Savannah (Stephen) Rolins, Fallon (Dennis) Kortum; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jaydine Morton of West Plains, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers: Jay G. and Rogers Arnold; and three sisters: Geneva Rodman, Beverly Hurst, and Jackie Hunt.

Graveside funeral service will be Saturday, January 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Melbourne Cemetery under the direction of Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Pallbearers: Thomas Johnson, David Dale, Stephen Rolins, Charlie Drake, Kyle Cherry, Dennis Kortum.

Honorary Pallbearers: Jim Fowler, Larry Norton, Tasker Rodman, III, David Hoover, Randy Engles.
