Mrs. Vera Ross Stell Smith, 89, of Hamburg, died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Woods Nursing Home in Monticello. Mrs. Smith was a native of Fountain Hill; a resident of Hamburg for many years and a former resident of Strong. She was a retired schoolteacher having taught in Strong, Fountain Hill, Homer & Mer Rouge, Louisiana. She was a member of the Gardner Baptist Church; a member of the Eastern Star and former president of the Ashley County Retired Teachers Association. She loved fishing and gardening.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Dewitt Stell and Murphy Smith; her parents, Jesse & Margaret Johnson Ross; two sisters, Ollie Bryan and Evie Kilcrease and a brother, Harvey Ross.
She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Graham of Hamburg; a son, Van Stell and wife, Theresa, of El Dorado; a brother, Virgle Ross of Sun Valley, California; a sister, Lois Simpson of Crossett; 9 grandchildren 21 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 22, 2009 in the chapel of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home with Rev. Judith Ross and Rev. Cliff Bernard officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Michael Smith, Shawn Ezell, Brandon Vail, David Brown, Butch Hill and Jimmy Stell. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons. Memorials may be made to the Hamburg High School Scholarship Fund, PO Box 30, Hamburg, AR or to the Gardner Baptist Church, PO Box 506, Hamburg, AR 71646.
