Obituary
Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home
Hamburg, Arkansas
Dr. Charles E. Hicks, 75, of Hamburg, died Sunday, February 14, 2010 at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock. Dr. Hicks was born January 25, 1935 of Monticello, son of the late James V. & Ruth Hansen Hicks. He was a United States Army veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Conway High School, Hendrix College and the University Of Arkansas School Of Medicine. After a one-year internship at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, he began his medical practice in Hamburg in 1961. In 1969, he left Hamburg to enter into a partnership with a long time friend in Drumright, Oklahoma, but missed Arkansas and returned in 1971 to practice medicine in Monticello with Dr. Johnny Price (who by no coincidence had delivered Dr. Hicks when he was born in the Old Mack Wilson Hospital in Monticello). In 1980 his long time friend, John William Spivey, came to him seeking his return to Ashley County, so he retuned to Hamburg to work in the Hamburg Clinic with Dr. J.D. Rankin. In 1988 he began working with Mainline Healthcare Systems in their Wilmot Clinic. He held the positions of Medical Director of Mainline, and Chief of Staff of Chicot Memorial Hospital in Lake Village for several years. He continued to care for his patients and work at Mainline until he became ill shortly before his death. He was a family practice physician who delivered many of the babies born in Ashley and Drew Counties during his medical career. He carefully and lovingly attended to the medical needs of a great many patients, friends and family members over a span of more than 50 years. When he was not seeing and treating patients, he loved to watch the Razorbacks play, the horses run in the Derby races and he loved to play golf. But his favorite pass-time by far was deer and duck hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was a lifetime hunter, having learned to hunt with his father at the Warren-Dumas Hunting Club outside of Cominto. He was a member and officer of the Berea Hunting Club in Ashley County and a member of the Empire Hunting Lodge in Eudora. He looked forward to every opportunity to gather with his entire family for birthday celebrations, holidays and other special occasions.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beth Boatright Hicks of Hamburg, whom he married on July 4, 1958 in Fayetteville, Arkansas; a daughter, Karen Withers and husband, Kerry, of Monticello; two sons, Kevin Hicks and Keith Hicks and wife, Angela, all of Hamburg; a sister, Rutha Jo Edwards of Elberta, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Hicks and Jeribeth Hicks of White Hall, James Hicks and Jennifer Hicks of Redfield, Luke Withers and wife, Rachel, and John Ross Withers all of Monticello and Samuel Hicks of Hamburg; a step-granddaughter, Jessica Mitchell and husband, David, of White Hall; a great-granddaughter, Madilyn Bejarano of Redfield and three nephews, Shawn, Shannon and Shad Edwards.

Funeral services are 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington and Dr. Greg Pierce officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jonathan Hicks, James Hicks, Luke Withers, John Ross Withers, Hunter Thompson and Tyler Thompson. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the First Baptist Church Men's Sunday School Class, members of the Berea Hunting Club and Empire Hunting Lodge. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 352, Hamburg, AR 71646 or to the American Cancer Society, 901 North University Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72207.
