Sammie Peters-Long, 92, of Van Buren, formerly of Fort Smith, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Okemah, Okla., and moved to Fort Smith in 1927.

She and her sister, Rachel Peters, owned and operated Sammie's Beauty Shop on Garrison Avenue in Fort Smith for 43 years. She was for many years co-owner of John Long's Aviation School and Service of Tulsa, president of St. Boniface Catholic Auxiliary, member of Arkansas Hairdressers Association, member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith, St. Boniface Catholic Daughters Association and was a technician for L'Oreal Inc. Beauty Products.

Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband, John Long; parents, Eugene and Ratie Peters; daughter, Jean Peters; and sister, Rachel Peters.

She was a volunteer at Mercy Crest and St. Edward Mercy Medical Center.

Rosary service was Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service was Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Calvary Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen H. Peters Sr. and wife Sandy Peters of Van Buren; dearest friend and baby sister, Katherine Marsh of Van Buren; three grandchildren, Claudia Irene Peters Mitchell, Lisa Fay Peters and Stephen H. Peters Jr.; and several nephews and cousins.
