Mrs. Verla Withers, 98, of Fountain Hill died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in the Beverly Health Care Center in Crossett. A native of Ashley County and life-time resident of Fountain Hill, she was a homemaker and a member of the Eden Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dewey Withers, in 1971; two sons, Gaston and Oliver Withers; a daughter, Frances Withers; her parents, Redden and Maidie Knight Bryan; five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by three sons, Bobby and Billy Withers of Fountain Hill and Jimmy Withers of Springdale; four daughters, Hester Neatherland Chandler of Magnolia, Christine Hays of Little Rock, Earline Alldread and Dorothy Dean Able of Duck Hill, MS; a sister, Edna Smoot of Bastrop, LA; 24 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in the Eden Baptist Church with Revs. Charles Pullin and Mike Titsworth officiating. Pallbearers were Ron, Bryan, Steve and Shawn Withers, Larry Chandler, Lowell Hays and Gary Alldread. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Mausehardt, Harbison Moffatt, D. L. Stephenson, L. T. Clark, V. W. Cason and Ralph Hollis. Burial followed services at the Flat Creek Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Eden Baptist Church, 3748 Highway 133 North, Hamburg, AR 71646.
