She was born on July 27, 1922, in Durham, N.C., to William Powell Twaddell and Anna Elizabeth Dunnock Twaddell.
She was the valedictorian of her high school class and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with Highest Honors from Swarthmore College in 1944. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa the same year. She was awarded the M.A. degree in American History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1945, and completed Ph.D. work, except dissertation, in 1947. Elizabeth completed the M.S. degree in Library Science at Drexel University, Philadelphia, in 1966. Following retirement in 1987 Elizabeth moved to Conway, to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She was a very active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Elizabeth was an avid photographer and world traveler, and she particularly enjoyed mounting exhibitions of her photographs from travels to Europe, Britain, Australia, Central and South America, North Africa, the United States and Canada.
Elizabeth is survived by daughters, Nancy Fleming (Ansley) of Conway and Elizabeth Santoro (Richard) of Guilford, Conn. She was extremely proud of the many accomplishments of both of them.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the administration and staff of Southridge Village in Conway and the team from Hospice Home Care for the care and support they provided during her long illness.
Cremation is under the direction of Roller-McNutt of Conway.
A memorial service and interment of ashes will take place at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Teri Daily officiating.
