Laurabell Murphy Brewer, 89, reside in Charleston, Arkansas, departed this life on Friday March 4, 2016 at her home. She was born June 10, 1926 in Rockford, Iowa, to the late Clement Lee and Lela Murphy. She was raised by her loving aunt and uncle, Clifford and Rose Crowell.
Laurabelle graduated from Rockford High School and Iowa State Teacher's College (now Northernn Iowa University). She had a long career as a public school teacher having worked at both Charleston and Lavaca Public schools. She was named Teacher of the Year at Lavaca and was frequently contacted by students she had mentored. In addition to her years of service as a school teacher she worked in medical records at Greenhurst and spent several summers working in national parks including the Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Glacier. She was an avid golfer, bridge and domino player and traveler. Her favorite trips were spent with her children and grandchildren.
She had a zest for life, was a constant learner and never met a stranger. She valued her bridge and golf buddies, as well as her neighbors. She considered her family to be her greatest treasure.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Brewer, her brothers Clement Lee and Richard Murphy, and her sister Marilyn McCrory, her mother and father-in-law Roy and Oma Brewer, her sister and brother-in-law Collene and Ivan Smith and brother-in-law, Maurice Brewer.
Celebration of life memorial service will be Tuesday, March 8th at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist in Charleston under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
She is survived by her daughters Kathy Roberts (husband, John) of Little Rock, Colleen Caton (husband, Larry of Inola, Oklahoma; and Laura Feeney (husband, Tom) of Edmond, Oklahoma; her grandchildren Derek Schaffer (Erica) of Little Rock, Tiffany Bouziden (Nate) of Windsor, Colorado, Michael Schwartz of Charleston, South Carolina, and Grady Caton of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren Jordan and Jace Bouziden, and Skyler and Payton Schaffer. She is also survived by special step-grandchildren John Roberts, 111 (Tamara), Scott Roberts (Cathey) of Fayetteville, Jason Roberts of Little Rock, Zack (Ilona) Feeney of Oklahoma City and step-great grandchildren Connor, Blakely, Donovan, Zoe, Blaine, Ridge and Haven Roberts.
Visitation will be Monday evening, March 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 at Smith Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
