Betty Jane Codling, 84, of Rogers passed away Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at her home.
She was born July 29, 1922, in Oakland, Calif., to John David Fitzgerald I and Claire Elaine Rerat Fitzgerald.
She was a graduate of Covina High School in California and worked for the Civil Defense Department in California and was city treasurer in Baldwin Park, Calif. While in Baldwin Park, she was head of the commercial and industrial design department and was the first president of the Vineland Elementary Parent Teachers Association. She was also very active in the Republican Women's Club. After moving to Arkansas in the early 1970s, she and her husband, William Howard Codling, owned and operated Codling's Corner Grocery Store and built the Battlefield Inn and Restaurant. She was on the Avoca Water Department Board and was the president of the Lady Elks Club in Rogers.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers and sisters, Beverly Enberg, John Fitzgerald, Kenmore Fitzgerald, Patricia Halman and Jack Fitzgerald.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William Howard Codling of the home; one son, Larry William Codling and wife Connie of Chama, N.M.; one daughter, Elaine Howard and husband Don of Rogers; one brother, Rex Fitzgerald and three sisters, June Burt, Diana Wheeler and Nancy Harding. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Cindy Chavez, Jonathan Rogers, Carmen Krummick, Tina Codling and Brooke Nelson; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous stepgrandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at Rollins Funeral Home in Rogers.
