March 8, 1934 - August 4, 2022
On March 8, 1934, Frank was born on a farm in McNeil, Arkansas, to Prentis and Rossie Monk. Frank was a true believer in Jesus Christ and his favorite Scripture was Proverbs 3:5; Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
He graduated from McNeil High School and served in the United States Army from August 1958 to May 1964 as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
In the 1960s, Frank joined the Greyhound organization after serving in the military, becoming one of the first African American Greyhound bus drivers in the South. As a trailblazer for African American rights, he fought against all barriers at the risk of his own freedom. Additionally, he trained the first female Greyhound bus drivers in Dallas, Texas.
After 20 years without an accident, Frank retired from Greyhound in 1989 and ensured African Americans were treated equally in the industry prior to his departure.
Frank was preceded in death by his father, Prentis Monk, and his mother, Rossie Monk; his son Donald Monk; brothers David Monk, Elijah Monk, and Elisha Monk; his sisters Elsa Johnson, Rossie McCravey, Ruby Pickens, Hazel Brown, and Minnie Jackson.
He is survived by his two daughters Dione Garrett and Heather Green (Todd); two sons Shannon Choice (Sylvia), and Richard Ruth, two stepdaughters; Britannica Garrett and Robin Garrett; two grandsons Donahven Garrett and Evan Green, and one granddaughter Eliana Green; and one brother Ellis Monk; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, August 13th, 2022, at R.L. Reed Funeral Home Chapel at 11:30 a.m., with burial to follow with Military Honors, at Old St. Matthew Garden in McNeil, AR, under the direction of R.L. Reed Funeral Home, LLC.
Visitation will be Friday, August 12th, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., at R.L. Reed Funeral Home.
