Obituary for G.A. Lewis Jr.:
Mr. G.A. Lewis, Jr., of the Remmel Community, Newport, Arkansas departed this life in Little Rock on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at the age of 93. He was born August 6, 1922, in Remmel, the son of George A. Lewis, Sr., and Gertha (Balch) Lewis. Mr. Lewis, with the exception of two weeks in Memphis, and his time served in the armed forces, spent his life living within a one mile radius of his birthplace.
He graduated from Newport High School in 1941. Mr. Lewis entered the military, and was a member of United States Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II as an airplane electrical specialist stationed in England. He and Miss Mary Ethel Darby were married in Dyes, Arkansas, on May 16, 1952. Together they made their home in the Remmel community, raised their three children, were active members of the Church and were loving, devoted members of the Remmel Community for the last 63 years.
He enjoyed woodworking, and teaching and sharing his craft with family and friends.
Mr. Lewis was a member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ, and for many years had served as a deacon at Remmel Church of Christ. He will forever be remembered as a faithful Christian, and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His greatest treasure was time spent with his family. Mr. Lewis’ Christian heart showed through always in his kind and gentle spirit.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by one son, Allen Lewis; two sisters, Lavetta Vincent and Lou Janette Rice.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ethel Darby Lewis of the home; one son, Tommy Lee Lewis of Newport; one daughter, Mary Ellen Koettel and husband, Ocon, of North Little Rock; four grandchildren, Rachel Gleason and husband, Daryl, Lindsey Lewis, Katie Lewis, and Madeline Lewis; three great-grandchildren, Kristofer Gleason, Kyra Gleason, and Kaylee Gleason; and a lifetime of friends.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Monday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Oran Burt officiating. Interment will follow in Remmel-McCall Cemetery.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Tommy Lewis, Ocon Koettel, Daryl Gleason, Keith Rice, Kerry Rice, and Johnny Nance.

Mrs. Mary Ethel (Darby) Lewis of North Little Rock, Arkansas, departed this life on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at the age of 92. She was born October 23, 1928, the daughter of Mervin Dolph and Mary (Schmitt) Darby.
Miss Mary Ethel Darby married Mr. G.A. Lewis, Jr., on May 16, 1952, and together they spent 63 years.
Mrs. Lewis was a school secretary for the Newport School District, and a member of Holden Avenue Church of Christ. She loved teaching children’s Bible school, and did so well into her 80’s. Mrs. Lewis enjoyed sewing, decorating cakes, cooking, and doing arts and crafts. She loved children, and enjoyed taking care of her family. She especially loved spending time with her family.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, G.A. Lewis, Jr.; one son, George Allen Lewis; five brothers, Samuel Darby, Colonel Harry Darby, Richard Darby, Ray Darby, and Bobby Darby; and one sister, Lora Crowder.
She is survived by one son, Tommy Lee Lewis of Newport; one daughter, Mary Ellen Koettel and husband, Ocon of North Little Rock; one brother, Julius Darby of Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren, Rachel Gleason and husband, Daryl, Lindsey Lewis, Katie Lewis, and Madeline Lewis; and three great-grandchildren, Kristofer , Kyra, and Kaylee Gleason.
Friends may visit at the funeral home, beginning Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment at Remmel-McCall Cemetery.
