DOUGLAS, Maude Ethel, daughter of George and Oda Dickerson, was born at Coffeyville, Kans., Oct. 20, 1897; died in a Batesville, Ark., hospital on June 23, 1986; aged 88 y. She was married to John Brooke, who preceded her in death (Flu during WWI). In 1922, she married Ed Buckingham, who also preceded her in death after seeking help at the Mennonite Sanitarium in La Junta, Colorado. She continued employment at the La Junta hospital and paid all accounts for her husband's care. During this time she became a member of the La Junta Mennonite Church. She expressed an interest in nurses training, so enrolled at Hesston Academy, Kansas, finished the necessary studies for a high school diploma, and by her own earnings paid all school accounts. She then entered training at La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing, graduating in 1929. She worked a short time in Denver, but then returned to her native Arkansas.

On Aug. 9, 1930, she married John A. Douglas. They moved to Culp, Ark. Here she became a legend in pioneering Sunday Schools and nursing to physical needs without telephone, electricity or available doctors. In many home births where she was the only medical attendent, there was never a death of mother or child! Through the Gospel Herald she communicated the needs of her people to the constituency of Mennonites at large. This led to other Mennonites come into the area and schools, Sunday schools, and churches. Eventually there developed the Calico Rock Medical Clinic and Calico Rock Church. In 1953, the Douglas family moved to the area of her childhood near Buford, Ark. Here her husband died in 1956, and a few years later she moved to Calico Rock. She served 11 years at the Clinic and 3 years at a convalescent home.
She leaves one daughter (Darlene Harrington) of Yelville, Ark., 2 stepdaughters (Edna Ivens and Jewell Kirkland) one foster daughter (Sandra Blankenship), 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one half-sister (Marie Perry). She was preceded in death by 2 half-brothers and 2 half-sisters.

She was a member of Calico Rock Mennonite Fellowship, where funeral services were held in charge of Floyd Miller and Frank Horst; interment in Calico Rock Mennonite Cemetery.
