January 29, 1929 - August 30, 2019
Martha Harrison Poe, age 90, of Hot Springs, passed away August 30, 2019. Martha was born January 29, 1929 to Gilford and Marie Harrison.
Martha is preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Joe Poe, her second husband, Lester Hickerson, and one brother Richard Harrison. Survivors include her loving children, Kathy (James) Ward, Tommy (Jeannette) Poe, Gil (Kelly Moran) Poe and sister-in-law Betty Harrison. Grandchildren include Kelly (Keith) VanHorne, Shannon Ward, Joseph (Meranda) Poe, Jennifer (Keith) Crow and Jacob Poe, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Martha was a lifelong resident of Hot Springs, graduating from HSHS in 1947. She was a devoted wife and loving Mother to her 3 children. Martha was a long time member of Second Baptist Church, living within two blocks of the Church for over 40 years. She was dedicated to her walk with the Lord and was a founding member of Hot Springs Baptist Church. Over the years she was involved in Bible Study Fellowship, Jr Auxiliary, Criterion Club and her beloved sewing group of over 50 years (survivors include Cora Lee Ray and Wayme Rowe). Martha was an avid hiker and a member of the Ouachita Mountain Hikers. She completed the entire 192-mile Ouachita trail at age 60. Her quick return to hiking after bypass surgery gained her the nickname “resurrection fern”.
The Poe family is grateful to Hospice Home Care and Golden Years Home Care for the loving care and support they provided at the end of Martha’s life.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:0 p.m. Friday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.
A private family burial will be held to celebrate her life.
Martha’s memory may be honored by contributions to Hot Springs Baptist Church, Ouachita Children’s Center or Jackson House.
