Audrey Ann Atherton, age 84 of Hot Springs died at her home surrounded by her family. She was born February 2, 1934 in Hot Springs and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1951. Atherton attended Randolph-Macon College and graduated Pi Beta Kappa from George Washington University. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Atherton completed her graduate studies at Henderson State University and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

She worked at Quapaw Technical Institute for 20 years, serving as an instructor, counselor, and Director of Instruction. Previously, Atherton had been the Executive Director of the Hot Springs YWCA for five years.

She was committed to numerous civic and religious activities. For four years, Atherton was a representative on the Garland County Quorum Court. She was on the Board of Trustees for Garland County Community College (now National Park College) for 12 years, the last year as president. Atherton served on the Garland County Library Board of Directors for 10 years, six years as president. She was member of the National Park College Foundation, serving one year as chair.

Atherton worshiped at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She was a member of St. Luke’s vestry for two terms, also serving on the State Diocese Executive Committee. Atherton was president of the Garland Country Medical Society Alliance and belonged to the association’s State Executive Committee. She was a volunteer for Jackson House for more than 25 years and was a member of the 1991 class of Leadership Hot Springs. Atherton served for six years as a member or an officer of the Community Services Office.

Her parents, Ann and Bernard Peters, preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Wilson and Evelyn Landrith, two grandchildren and their spouses, Graham and Elizabeth Landrith, Audrey Ann and Andrew Pruitt, and her cousin, Marilyn Ragan.

The memorial service will be at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on January 5th at 10:00 a.m. with a reception afterwards. Honorary pallbearers are William Creason, James Dowds, Dr. P. Timothy English, Dr. Robert Johnson, Graham Landrith, Andrew Pruitt, Brooks Clem, John Wells, and Larry Williams. Memorials may be made to Garland County Library, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, or a charity of choice.
