January 10, 1889 - January 2, 1963
Funeral service for Samuel Layton Sloan, 73 of Howe, Oklahoma was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Newberry Chapel, Rudy, with Rev. Watson, pastor, officiating.
He was the son of the late Jim Sloan of near Rudy, Arkansas, and a cousin of Ed Sloan and Mrs. Ruth Crabtree of Van Buren and Mrs. Jim Kenner, Mrs. Eula West, Mrs. Tom Gatewood, Mrs. Mattie Bkroyles, and Mrs. Bill Osborne of Rudy and Alma.
Burial was in Newberry Chapel cemetery by the Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener, Oklahoma.
Mr. Sloan died at the Vinita, Oklahoma hospital Wednesday after a long illness.
Survivors include his wife, Rose of the home; four sons, Edsel of the home, Kenneth of Denver, Colorado, James of Yuma Arizona, and Gerald of Fort Smith, Arkansas; one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Mullins of Concord, California; three brothers, Hugh of Howe, Willard of Fort Smith and Bluford of Rudy; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Davenport of Howe; and eight grandchildren.
The honorary pallbearers were members of the Rudy baseball team of which he played with about 1910 to 1916.
