Obituary from Roller Funeral Home Website:

Laverne Smith
of Monkey Run, Arkansas
March 2, 1930 - February 25, 2022

Mrs. Dorothy Laverne (Rogers) Smith, 91, of Monkey Run, Arkansas passed away Friday, February 25, 2022 in Gassville, Arkansas.

Laverne was born in Baxter County, Arkansas to Ara Orville Rogers and Sarah (Rice) Rogers on March 2, 1930. She was the only daughter of eight children (poor soul!).

Laverne was a loving wife and mother of 4 children. Her pride and joy were her kids and grandkids.

Laverne met handsome Noel Ople Smith in 1948 and they were married on Christmas Eve in 1948. To that union 4 wonderfully fantastic children came along: Mina Gay, Holly Beth, Roger and Lindell.

Laverne and Ople were proud supporters of their children. They were there for their ballgames, band concerts, class plays, graduations and so much more.

Opie, Laverne, and children worshipped at Liberty Church of Christ which was located on one acre donated by her grandparents, W.C. and Bertie Rice. W.C. was a horseback riding gospel minister for the church of Christ. Later, they were faithful worshippers at the Riverside Church of Christ in Gassville.

Laverne was a seamstress, creating most of the clothes for her growing family. She was also a good cook, but heaven forbid you asked what was in the dish (you just ate it!) because she was notorious for substitutions in her cooking. She loved to talk and write poetry, some of which will be read at her service.

Laverne worked 5 years at the MarBax Shirt factory and later at Baxter Lab for 22 years. After retirement, she and Ople loved to travel with the Monkey Run gang.

Laverne is survived by daughters Mina (Ray) Benjamin and Holly Smith; son, Roger (Rogena) Smith; a brother, Floyd Rogers; grandchildren Chad (Candi) Darnell, Shannon Darnell, Aaron (Pam) Darnell, Jason (Heather) Smith and Sarah (Brody) Blagg; 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, plus many more family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Bill, Claude, Clyde, Jim, Wayne and Roy Rogers, and son Lindell Smith.

A visitation will be held between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at the Riverside Church of Christ in Gassville, with services to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandkids Chad, Aaron, Shannon, Jason, Sarah and grandson-in-law, Brody. Honorary pallbearers will be special granddaughters-in-law Heather Smith, Candi Darnell and Pam Darnell along with other great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to the Cotter Alumni Association, P.O. Box 117, Cotter, Arkansas 72626 or Children's Home, Inc., 5515 Walcott Road, Paragould, AR 72450.
