Dorothy G. Burkett, age 96, of New Smyrna Beach, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sarah, Mississippi to George and Willie Mote Stevens, Mrs. Burkett lived in New Smyrna Beach during the winter time, for 28 years. Her summer home was in Festus, Missouri, where she was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Dorothy loved taking care of her family and enjoyed sewing, in her spare time. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn (John) Delavan of New Smyrna Beach; four granddaughters, Tina Black of New Smyrna Beach, Cindy (Gary) Colburn of Liberty Township, OH, Deborah (Robert) Alonzo of New Smyrna Beach, and Rebecca (Patrick) Jones of Port Charlotte; three grandsons, Leon Black of Festus, MO, Byron Gyer of Las Vegas, NV, and John (Estera) Delavan of New Smyrna Beach; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Sanford, and her son, Stanley. A celebration of Mrs. Burkett's life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home, led by her family. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. until time of service, at the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date in Gray Cemetery, Gravel Hill, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donation in Mrs. Burkett's name to: Halifax Health Hospice, c/o Southeast Volusia Care Center, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
