Marylane Kuszmaul Thorne, 94, died on March 17, 2012, in Albuquerque, N.M.
She was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Dodge City, Kan., to Foster and Marie Arnold Kuszmaul. She grew up in Kansas City, graduating in 1934 from Central High School and in 1938 from the Teachers' College of Kansas City.
She began her teaching career in the two-room Lane School in Raytown, Mo., and then at the Linwood and RJ Delano Schools in Kansas City. For 28 years, she was a special education teacher for hospitalized patients at the public school at Children's Mercy Hospital. She was a life member of the International Council for Exceptional Children and a long-time member of the Linwood Presbyterian Church.
She married Alden T. Thorne on Sept. 5, 1942, and they celebrated 60 years together before his death in 2002. They spent their retirement years in Bella Vista, starting in 1980, where they were members of the First Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Edward Aalseth, of Albuquerque, N.M., and by her beloved terrier, Posy.
Interment will be in Bella Vista Memorial Garden Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to a local animal shelter or Humane Society.
