Smith, Alfred Thomas well known resident of Springdale [Wash Co] died at 1:30 am Aug 31 at his home on Holcomb
St. His death was not a surprise as he'd been in ill health for a number of years & confined to his bed since March. The cause of death was articular rheumatism from which he'd long been a sufferer and had made a number of trips to Hot Springs, St Louis & Rochester, Minn in the hope of finding relief.

Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 2 pm conducted by Rev W.I. Ellidge, the former pastor of the church here, assisted by Rev J.M. Bandeen of Hindsville. Music was furnished by a choir from different churches of the town. Arrangements were in charge of Frank Moore, undertaker of Fayetteville and burial was at the Hindsville cemetery in Madison county

He was born at Hindsville Aug 20, 1861, being a son of Andy & Ellen Scritchfield Smith. He was the last surviving member of a family of 18 children, his father having been married 3 times. On Dec 11, 1881 he was united in marriage to Florence Elizabeth Fitch, daughter of the late Catlet Fitch, one of the pioneer residents of Madison county. Mr Smith spent most of his life at Hindsville, acquiring an education in the public schools at that place. He engaged in farming and stock raising, trading, etc and accumulated considerable wealth.

Seventeen years ago, the family came to Springdale which has since been their home. They were the parents of 13 children, 10 of whom, with the widow survive the deceased. The children are: Mrs. Virgil Davis of Braggs, Okla; Andy C. of Denver, Colo; Mrs. Shearley Arendale of Muskogee, Okla.; Fay M. Smith of Hindsville; Mrs. Wm L. Bunch of Springdale; Paul of Hindsville; Miss Ophelia, Byron, Fred and Lawrence Smith. All were present except Andy.
