Jack Dempsey Garlington, 89 of Bearden, died suddenly Sunday, November 13, 2011 at his home. Retired from International Paper Company, Jack was married to Annie Virginia Mosley for 57 years. She preceded him in death a little over a year ago. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Joe Ethridge.
The youngest son of the late Claudia and James Garlington, Jack was born in Carthage, Arkansas. He attended Fordyce schools where he was voted "Most Handsome". One of his proudest moments happened on the football field where the lower ranked Redbugs beat the higher ranked Hot Springs team.
As a young man he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression and helped build many of the trails and cabins that are still standing in state and national parks in northwest Arkansas. An avid hunter throughout his life and expert marksman, Jack loved the outdoors as much as he loved the horse races.
Jack is survived by two daughters, Sharon Garlington of Bearden and Kay Ethridge of Temple, Texas; two sisters, Mary Lou Barnes of Fordyce and Willie Faye McKissack of Little Rock; a grandson Josh Ethridge of Belton, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 AM until 1 PM at Benton Funeral Home in Bearden. Graveside services will be 2 PM Wednesday at Moss Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Southern Baptist Church of Bearden, Arkansas. Arrangements by Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce.
