J. H. Cavaness was struck by a train and killed instantly at Argenta (now central North Little Rock). He nd his son Andrew G. Cavaness were traveling to Fayetteville where the young man would attend university, and the father would then travel on to St. Louis to purchase goods.
At the time of his death, J. H. Cavaness was a prominent citizen of Drew County and living at Montongo with his wife and six children.
