When John Lewis Ishmael was born on November 22, 1892, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, his father, Hiram, was 30 and his mother, Tennessee, was 28. He married Ida Leona Meachum on September 15, 1913, in Independence, Arkansas. They had six children in 18 years. He died on November 11, 1970, in West Helena, Arkansas, at the age of 77, and was buried in Walnut Corner, Arkansas.
