When James William Helms was born on July 6, 1864, in Gleason, Tennessee, his father, William, was 32 and his mother, Margaret, was 27. He married Alice Isidora Hughes in 1884 in Carroll, Tennessee. They had six children in 11 years. He died on January 16, 1944, in DeWitt, Arkansas, at the age of 79, and was buried in Stuttgart, Arkansas.
