John R. “Bob” Reeves, Jr., age 90, of Camden, was born March 23, 1922 in Camden, AR and died March 7, 2013.
He was a 1939 graduate from Camden Public Schools where he was president of the Student Council and Student Body, an Honor Student and member of the National Honor Society. He attended the University of Arkansas and received a BSChE degree. He was a member of SAE, AICHE, Scabbard & Blade, Presbyterian Men’s Class and a life member of the Arkansas Alumni Association.
He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, Chemical Warfare Service on October 30, 1943. He served 3½ years during World War II as a Marine Engineer on Army Vessels. Bob became a licensed Marine Engineer and Chief Engineer and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.
Bob was employed as an Engineer with International Paper Company in 1947. He served in various mills in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama for 36 years. He managed the Bastrop, Louisiana and Moss Point, Mississippi mills for a total of 10 years. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.
A Rotarian since 1958, Bob was a Charter Member and Past President of both the Springhill, Louisiana Rotary Club and Moss Point, Mississippi Rotary Club, Treasurer of Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Jackson County, Mississippi. He was also a member of Jackson County Industrial Managers, TAPPI.
He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and former church treasurer and choir member.
He served on the Board of East Texas Coating Co., Board of Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives, Commissioner on the Old State House Board, Camden Board of Adjustment and Appeals, Ouachita County Historical Society, and the Ouachita-Calhoun Genealogical Society. Bob was also a member of the Men About Town singing group.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Reynolds Reeves; four daughters, Ann Reeves Wilmer and husband, Richard, Mary Reeves Keahey and husband, Robert, Linda Reeves, and Laura Reeves Toeller; grandchildren, Lauren Stevens Thelen and husband, Brent, Jason Stevens, Christina Toeller and Alex Toeller; and great-granddaughter, Fiona.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 PM Saturday at the funeral home. Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
