Madelyn Rucks Atkinson, a resident of El Dorado, AR, died on Sunday, May 19, 2019. She was born on December 13, 1930, in Camden, AR, to Edmond Daniel Rucks and Ruth Hodnett Rucks.

She was a graduate of El Dorado High School and had an associate’s degree from SAU-El Dorado Branch. She was employed by Security Abstract Company; Union County Clerk’s Office where she served 13 years as a deputy and 21 years as county and probate clerk. During her time in the County Clerk’s Office, they went from extending the tax books by hand to a tax-billing machine and then to the first computer for the county. They went from paper ballots to a voting machine. She served as secretary to the Arkansas County Clerk’s Association. She also served several years as secretary and vice chairman to the Union County Democratic Central Committee and secretary to the Union County Election Commission.

After retiring from the clerk’s office, she was employed for seventeen and one half years by the law firm of Compton, Prewett, Thomas & Hickey, PA. She was, for several years, a member of the El Dorado Business and Professional Women’s Club where she served as president and district director. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of El Dorado and the Ruth-Grace Class.

She was pre-deceased by her parents; one brother, William Hodnett Rucks; and one grandson, John S. Beebe, IV.

She is survived by a son, Charles Randall Atkinson and wife, Vicki, of Hot Springs, AR; two granddaughters, Ashley Beebe Solomon and husband, Ritchie, of Fayetteville, AR; Amber Atkinson Spencer and husband, John, of Springdale, AR; and three great grandchildren, Katelyn Solomon, Cyler Spencer and Winnie Spencer; a great great-granddaughter, Willow Solomon; one sister, Elizabeth Mercer of Houston, TX; and a sister-in-law, June Rucks of Santa Ana, CA; several nieces, nephews and friends.

A special thanks is given to friends and caregivers, Annie Ruth Easter, Sheldon Easter and Annie White. A graveside memorial services under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Arlington Memorial Park with Dr. Jonathan Kelley and Rev. Brian Trostle officiating. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of El Dorado, 200 West Main, El Dorado, AR. 71730 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
