Powell Funeral Home Obituary

Shirley Pegan Boyd was born March 8, 1930, in Lynchburg, Ohio, and departed this life October 5, 2010, after a long, full life of devotion to her family and to her Lord. During the last few years, she fought bravely against cancer and became an inspiration to others as she continued to serve in many ways. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, H. Glenn Boyd, three children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents, Courtland and Stella Holladay Pegan, and two brothers, Russell and Robert Pegan. Shirley and Glenn met at Harding College in 1948, and after graduating, they were married in December, 1952 at the College Church of Christ. This church has been their home again since they returned to Searcy in 1981. In the meantime, Shirley and Glenn served a church in South Point, Ohio, for five years where Shirley taught first grade. Then they answered a call to go to Karlsruhe, Germany, as missionaries, and worked in Germany for 16 years. The last eight of those years they also directed the Pepperdine University Year-in-Europe program, and Shirley studied at the University of Heidelberg, where she received her master's degree in German Language and Culture in 1973. During those years in Germany, Shirley worked with German children, young people and women, assisting in developing seminars, retreats, and similar activities. While in Germany they adopted their first two children: Janet, born in 1958, and John, born in 1961; in 1968, Shirley gave birth to Jayson. In 1973, they returned to California where they taught at Pepperdine University and helped start a congregation at Thousand Oaks, California. Shirley also taught at San Fernando Valley Christian Schools and as adjunct German teacher at Pepperdine. In 1981, Shirley and Glenn returned to Searcy where Glenn became president of African Christian Hospitals Foundation. Shirley returned to Harding to complete her master's in education with an emphasis in English. She then taught English at Rose Bud High School and later at Harding Academy until 1990 when she became an instructor in German at Harding University until her retirement in 1996. She always assisted Glenn in his ministries, kept an immaculate house, cooked delicious meals for her family and friends, served as a volunteer at White County Memorial Hospital, and devoted hours to church activities. She had an amazing gift of being able to build other people up while undergoing grueling medical problems herself. Her three children and their spouses are: Janet and Andreas Reinhardt of Berlin, Germany; John and Candy Boyd of Lubbock, Texas; Jason and Elvira Boyd of Lewisville, Texas. Her six grandchildren are Tabea and her husband, Ryan Bakke, of Chicago; Jonathon Reinhardt of Princeton, New Jersey; Miriam and her husband, Grant Pinkston, of Kaiserlautern, Germany; Benjamin Reinhardt of Berlin, Germany; and Cody Boyd and Taylor Boyd of Lewisville, Texas. Her four great-grandchildren are Florian and Finn Bakke and Jonah and Abner Pinkston. She is also survived b y two sisters: Elma Mary May, and Thelma Smith. Services will be under the direction of Powell Funeral Home of Searcy and the guestbook can be signed at www.powellfuneralhome.net. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home. The Funeral services will be held at College Church on Saturday, October 9 at 10 a.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to International Health Care Foundation, 102 North Locust, Searcy, Arkansas 72143.
